  1. He said, ” I shall read the book Now”
    Answer: He said that he would read that book then.
  2. I said to him, ” you will get it today”.

  3. He said to me, ” I shall start for kolkata tomorrow.”
    Answer: He told me that he would start for kolkata the next day.
  4. She said, ” I meet my mother yesterday.”
    Answer: she said that she met her mother the previous day.

Changes in Tense of direct and indirect speech rules

The Tense forms changes during converting a sentence from direct speech to indirect speech as bellow

  1. present Indfinite becomes to past indifinite
  2. present continuous becomes to past continuous
  3. present perfect becomes to past perfect
  4. past indifinte becomes to past perfect
  5. past perfect becomes to past perfect continuous
  6. shall, will becomes to should,would

Changes in place expression

As we was learning about rules of direct and indirect speech, so we have to learn changes in place expression in a sentence to change it from indirect speech to direct or direct to indirect.

  1. He said, ” I have written this letter.”
    Answer: He said that he had written that letter.
  2. She said, ” I bought these books yesterday.”
    Answer: She said that she had bought those books previous day.

Some Extra direct and indirect speech rules

If we found a ‘ Question Mark’ in a direct speech, Then we have to use ” ASK” or “Enquire” and “If” on the place of “that” and the sentence will be Asserative Sentance.

Some Examples-

  1. He says to me, ” do you play football?”
    Answer: He Asked me if I played football.
  2. He said to me, ” Are you well?”
    Answer: He asked me if I was well.
  3. He said to me, ” will you to school?”
    Answer: He Asked me if I go to school.
  4. Ram said to judu, ” Are you hungry?”
    Answer: Ram asked Judu if he was hungry.

 In some speech, the question do not starts with Do, Does, Did and starts with Who, which, what, whom. In this case we can’t use “If” or “Wheather” and the sentence will be on structure of the question. example –

  1. He said to me, ” Who has done it?”
    Answer: He Asked me who had done it.
  2. I said to him, ” where are you going?”
    Answer: I Asked him where he was going.
  3. He said to me, ” What are you doing?”
    Answer: He asked me what he was doing.
  4. He said to me, ” which is your book?”
    Answer: He asked me which mine book was.
  5. Heron is saying, ” where will yo go?”
    Answer: Heron is saying where he will go.

If the reporting verb found as a imperative sentence, then depending on the expression of thought we have to use Command, advise, tell, ask, request, beg, pray, forbit etc. and ‘ to’ in the place of That. 

Example:  He said to his servent, ” Come here. ”

Answer: He ordered his servent to go there.

  1. General said to the soldier, ” March on”
    Answer: General Commanded to the soldier to march on.
  2. Father said to me, ” Be kind to the poor.”
    Answer: Father advised me to be kind to the poor.
  3. I said to him, ” go home at once.”
    Answer: I told him to go home at once.
  4. Ram said to me, “Please lend me your book.”
    Answer: Ram Requested me to lend him my book.
  5. He said to me, Excuse me sir”
    Answer: He begged me to excuse him.

 If the Direct speech is in Optative sentence, then the reporting verb may be changed and we may have to use Wish, Pray, blesss etc verb. But the sentence will be in assarative sentence form. for example-  He said to me, ” may you be happy”
Answer: He wished that I might be hapy.

    Answer: we wished that our president might long live.

    Ans: The girl said that he would go with us.
